Dr. Kurt Roth leads Energy Systems research at Fraunhofer USA. His team collaborates with industry on applied research to develop, analyze, test, evaluate, and demonstrate energy-saving building technologies and aproaches to integrate large quantities of renewable energy with the electric grid. Currently, Dr. Roth is a Co-PI for a DOE SunShot demonstration project to optimize the operation of MW-scale PV, energy storage, and facility load management to enable the electric grid to reliably integrate high levels of PV. He has also led several studies to assess the energy savings and commercialization potentials of building technologies, including HVAC, building controls and diagnostics, toplighting, and information (IT) technologies, and to characterize building energy consumption by consumer electronics, IT, miscellaneous and electronic loads (MELS), and medical equipment. Prior to joining Fraunhofer CSE, he was a Principal in the Mechanical Systems group of TIAX LLC, formerly Arthur D. Little’s Technology & Innovation business. Dr. Roth has presented at numerous conferences and meetings, and authored more than sixty "Emerging Technology" articles for the ASHRAE Journal. Dr. Roth received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), all in mechanical engineering. He is a member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), Northeast Sustainable Energy Association (NESEA), and Sigma Xi.
